Senior Research Officer, Group Leader, Immunobiology of Cytokines, Immunology Program, Garvan Institute of Medical Research; Lecturer (conjoint appointment), The University of New South Wales

Research Group: Immunobiology of Cytokines

Marcel carried out her PhD studies on the development of systemic autoimmune disease at the Garvan Institute before venturing over to San Francisco as a post doctoral fellow at Genentech Inc. Returning to the Garvan Institute at the beginning of 2009, her primary area of interest involves the study of how cytokines of the IL-12 family coordinate interactions between various immune cells.

Marcel’s group is interested in studying how newly discovered cytokines work during normal immune responses to infection as well as how they are involved in autoimmune disease and whether they can activate the immune system to delete emerging tumours.  This will inform us as to whether the new cytokines could be valuable new therapeutic targets in these diseases.
