Sean Humphrey wins 2010 Castle Harlan Award

26 Oct 2010 Sean Humphrey has received the $10,000 USD Castle Harlan Award for being the most outstanding early career PhD student at the Garvan Institute in 2010. His research uses the latest mass spectrometry technologies to study Type 2 diabetes as a system.

David Pedersen wins Australian Diabetes Society award

07 Sep 2010 Garvan PhD student David Pedersen won the Pincus Taft Junior Investigator Award last week at the Australian Diabetes Society’s annual conference.

Scientific Positions

 
Casual Research Assistant

The Neurodegenerative Disorders Research Group is seeking two casual research assistants to assist with projects relating to Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease and stem cells.

Successful candidates will be:

  • highly motivated individuals who are interested in cutting edge neuroscience research
  • highly organised and able to meet deadlines
  • willing to work as part of a choesive team

Both positions will not be suitable for those interested in undertaking graduate medicine in 2013.

Bioresource Manager

We are seeking to appoint a Bioresource Manager to support the research goals of the Prostate Cancer Group.  This role also incorporates the key position of NSW node Coordinator for the Australian Prostate Cancer Collaboration (APCC) Bioresource.

 Keys duties would include:

  • Acquiring clinical data and biospecimens
  • Data management and mining
  • Coordination of all operational activities
  • Recommendations of improved techniques, quantitative methods and quality control

 

The position is full time and based at the Garvan Institute and the St Vincent’s Hospital Campus.

 

All applicants must be able to meet the following criteria:

  • Minimum of four years research experience
  • Well developed database or bioinformatics experience
  • Excellent oral, written and presentation communication skills and
  • Contribute to and be part of a team

 

It is also desirable that the candidate have:

  • Laboratory knowledge and experience
  • Pathology experience and
  • Previous clinical research or clinical trial experience

 

The successful candidate will join a supportive team and will play a key part in the quest for a better understanding of the molecular and cell biology of cancer. Research Group: Prostate Cancer
 
Research Assistant - Cancer Research Program

The Development Group within the Garvan’s Cancer Research Program (www.garvan.org.au) is currently building and using models of altered mammary and prostate development in association with genome-wide screening techniques, to investigate carcinogenic process within these tissues.

 

To support these projects, we are seeking a talented and enthusiastic person for the position of Research Assistant within the Development Group.

 

Applicants should have a background in molecular biology, biochemistry, cell biology, bioinformatics or related disciplines, be an Australian citizen or permanent resident, and have recently completed (or are currently completing), a Bachelor of Science degree with Honours. Research Assistant applicants with a view to undertaking PhD studies at the Garvan within the next three years are also encouraged to apply.

Research Group: Mammary Development
 
Research Assistant - Eating Disorders/Neuroscience

Applications are invited for a Research Assistant to join an established collaborative team which studies the molecular mechanisms controlling appetite, energy expenditure and adiposity using several different conditional knockout models.

The successful applicant will have one or two years of experience with a strong background in mouse related work and demonstrated competence in biochemistry type analysis.  Knowledge in the basic molecular biology techniques, in situ hybridisation immunohistochemistry and other related localisation techniques are an advantage.

Research Group: Eating Disorders
 
Research Assistant, Pancreatic Cancer

The opportunity exists for a junior research assistant to join our Pancreatic Cancer Research group as part of the Australian Pancreatic Cancer Genome Initiative, a member of the International Cancer Genome consortium (please visit www.icgc.org and www.pancreaticcancer.net.au for more information). This is a full-time position. The successful candidate will undertake highly translational research project with a focus on biomarker driven preclinical testing of novel drugs and drug combinations for the treatment of pancreatic cancer and the participation in the main sequencing project.

 

We are seeking a highly motivated individual interested in cutting edge pancreatic cancer research, who is highly organised, able to consistently meet deadlines, and be willing to work as part of a cohesive team. Applicants would ideally possess a background in cancer biology (BSc Hons or MSc degree), with experience in cell culture, molecular techniques and animal models of cancer, though training will be provided.

Non Scientific Positions

 
Air Conditioning Technician

We are currently seeking a motivated and well organised Air Conditioning Technician to join our team. You will have a variety of responsibilities including site building support and preventative maintenance scheduling, be involved with and operate the computerised building management and control system (BMCS), arrange of quotes for various repairs and upgrades and ensuring compliance is met with Occupational Health, Safety and Environmental policies.

 

Essential duties include:

- Maintain equipment/plant within the building(s), following a preventative maintenance schedule, and responding to emergency repairs

- Identify and report all maintenance, remedial works, upgrades, modifications or deficiencies to management

- Maintain costs to a minimum, while ensuring an efficient and compliant service is delivered to the highest standard.

- Willingness to work outside of normal hours for on-call incidents/events

- Organise, manage and supervise external contractors as required

 

This is a full time position.
