Postgraduate Research

The Garvan Institute of Medical Research is one of Australia's leading biomedical research centres, achieving major breakthroughs in the understanding and treatment of such diseases as osteoporosis, cancer, diabetes, mental illness, pituitary disease, arthritis and asthma. Garvan is affiliated with St. Vincent's Hospital and The University of New South Wales. Annual research expenditure is in excessof $60 million.

Students comprise nearly a quarter of our researchers, roughly 70-80 at any one time. While the majority are PhD students, we also welcome Honours and MSc students.

Postgraduate students contribute significantly to our scientific success and Garvan actively seeks high calibre people who demonstrate initiative and independent thought.

SAG
Students at Garvan (SAG) is the student representative group within the Garvan Institute. The aim in establishing SAG was to bring together the institute's growing student population and provide both academic support and social activities in our off-campus environment. Key events of the year include seminars and workshops addressing aspects of student life not directly laboratory related, a picnic poster session and scavenger hunt.
