Cancer Therapies
The Cancer Development Laboratory, established in mid-2007, aims to identify which of the molecular targets discovered by Garvan's cancer researchers hold promise for new cancer therapies and undertake early development of therapeutics against such targets.
Biotech and pharmaceutical companies are constantly alert for molecular targets in their quest to develop new drugs. Drug development is very costly, however, and companies first need some validation of targets. Strong evidence that blocking the expression or function of certain molecular targets reduces tumour growth and/or metastasis in cell culture and in animal models is needed to support drug development initiatives. Our focus is on intracellular targets for small molecule inhibitor drugs. We develop high throughput chemical screening assays to identify inhibitor compounds that are extensively characterized for suitability in further drug development.
We work closely with Garvan's Business Development Unit to identify potential commercial partners and to set up collaborative and/or licensing agreements.
