Contribute to our New Projects Fund

The New Projects Fund enables us to initiate new areas of research.

You may not be aware that before we can apply for government grant funding for research projects, between 30 and 50% of the work must be completed in order to provide preliminary data on which the application is based. Therefore, each year, we must find the funds to ensure we can begin new and innovative work.

As a contributor to the New Projects Fund you will receive:

• six monthly progress reports

• invitations to informal update sessions with researchers

In Memoriam Gifts

Making an in memoriam donation is a very special way of commemorating a loved one. In this way both you and your loved one can become part of the quest for a cure. You may also like friends and mourners to make a donation to Garvan in lieu of flowers. We can provide you with information, donation slips and envelopes prior to the funeral. If more than $1,000 is raised in this way, we can place a commerative plaque on a seat in our NAB Auditorium. Please contact our Supporter Services Manager to arrange. Major gifts from an individual or organisation (company, trust or prescribed private fund) can often mean the difference to whether an area of research can continue. Major gifts can also enable Garvan to purchase essential pieces of equipment, or to establish an endowed Chair or Fellowship.

In 2006:

• Individual commitments of $100,000 plus per year over several years allowed us to establish a core team in a brand new area of research. We aim to do this in areas that are either complementary to our current research strengths (such as the gift that allowed us to set up our lung cancer program) or where there is great community need that we have the capacity to address (such as the gift that initiated our research into Prader Willi syndrome).
  

• The Ernest Heine Memorial Foundation’s commitment to providing secure funding of $150,000 per year for three years for our Dubbo Osteoporosis study helped enable the research to continue in a year when it was threatened by lack of government grant funding.
• An individual gift, made through the company, allowed our imaging unit to buy the demonstration model of a Zeiss TIRF microscope especially configured for Garvan’s needs. Had this gift not come through, we were faced with returning the instrument.

• A gift of $1million from the Curran Foundation enabled Garvan to establish the Curran Foundation Chair in Neuroscience with a focus on hearing loss research.

The Garvan Research Foundation takes pride in tailoring acknowledgement of major gifts to suit our benefactors. However, unless otherwise indicated, all major gifts are acknowledged in the following ways:

• On the Garvan Honour Board in the Instutite galleria. Depending on the level of giving, the giver is acknowledged as either a Friend, Fellow, Benefactor, Governor or Life Governor.
• In our Annual Report. We also enjoy our practice of involving some of our major givers in the report's feature photography.
• On our website. Corporate partners are listed on our site. Individual gifts may or may not be listed.

Should the gift involve equipment or naming rights to one of our facilities, it will also usually be acknowledged by installation of a plaque on site and an opening ceremony.

Additional public relations activities that may be organised are agreed to in advance by both parties and carefully managed.

Special care is taken to keep our major benefactors up to date with the progress of our research. This typically involves invitations to special briefings, meetings with the relevant researchers, and provision of written reports once a year, or as otherwise negotiated.
