Minister launches Garvan Alcoa community health partnership

08 Aug 2007 On 7 August, Minister for Science and Medical Research, the Hon. Verity Firth, officially launched an innovative partnership between Garvan and local aluminium recycler and manufacturer Alcoa. The Garvan Institute visited Alcoa’s Yennora plant to deliver customised interactive presentations to workers about diseases such as prostate cancer, osteoporosis and diabetes. The company hopes the education will benefit the health of employees and their families.

Company giving

Garvan has a long history of successful partnerships with large publicly-listed and smaller private companies. A number of our existing corporate partners also encourage their staff to support Garvan through workplace giving, and may match employee donations.

Investing in medical research at Garvan is a sound business proposition. Your organisation will be aligning itself with a prestige brand and an innovative, world-class enterprise focused on delivering health outcomes to the Australian community. Both our research and fundraising staff are conscious of your accountabilities to shareholders and/or employees and other stakeholders in your business.

Within our research priorities, we aim to tailor Garvan’s investment proposition and our marketing, reporting and acknowledgement deliverables to your company’s drivers and needs. Typically this will involve a briefing process where we learn about each other, and then presentation of a customized proposal. Corporate partnerships can be structured around a range of options, including:

  • sponsorship of a particular project or event (for example, the Alcoa Foundation’s support for Garvan’s 2007 Public Seminar Series)
  • a three year pledge to support a specific piece of research with defined outcomes and milestones (for example, Amadeus Energy Ltd’s support for our search to find a cure for Parkinson’s disease)
  • in-kind support (such as the Accor Group’s gift of discounted hotel accommodation around Australia)
  • purchase of a particular piece of scientific equipment (such as Macquarie Bank Foundation’s support for an Arcturus Laser Capture Microdissection System)
  • point of sale fundraising (for example, Witchery’s commitment to raising funds for breast cancer research through retail sales of pink ribbons)
  • a named research fellowship

If you would like to open a discussion about the possibilities that would work best for your company, please contact Carole Renouf, the CEO of the Garvan Research Foundation by calling (02) 9295 8114 or emailing foundationceo'at'garvan.org.au.
