St Vincents and Mater Health Sydney Research Symposium, 24th September 2010
Welcome to the 20th annual St Vincents & Mater Health Sydney (SV&MHS) Research Symposium. This year is a great year for the Symposium, after two decades of meetings, and the first year of the newest and most prestigious level of support, the Platinum sponsorship, provided this year by St Vincents & Mater Health Sydney. The sponsorship is a clear sign of the high level of commitment to research by the Hospital and the health service, and we are very thankful to the CEO of SV&MHS, Mr Steven Rubic in particular, for showing this support. Once again, the meeting will take place in and around the NAB Auditorium and the Garvan Institute of Medical Research, in Darlinghurst, Sydney.
Over the past 19 years, we have heard 76 invited speakers, as well as over 300 students and postdoctoral researchers, and seen over 1500 posters.
We are now calling for abstracts from current researchers and students. All submitted abstracts will be considered for oral presentations, apart from prizewinners from the past two years. Delegates whose abstract is not selected to give an oral presentation will be invited to present a poster. Details of abstract preparation can be found on the registrations page, which will open on 16th July.
Scientific Program:
This year, we have invited four speakers from various fields. As usual, we will hear some of the latest news in clinical as well as basic research, and also a talk about the Tasmanian Devil, one of the great iconic Australian native animals, and the fight to save it from death and possible extinction. The invited speakers are listed below. Further information on our speakers can be found here.
Dr Caroline Gargett, PhD. Monash Institute of Medical Research
"Endometrium: Cinderella tissue in a stem cell world"
Dr Bob Anderson PhD FRACP. The Walter & Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research
"Harnessing gluten toxicity to make a drug for coeliac disease"
Dr Josephine Forbes, PhD. Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes Institute
"Unraveling the caramel spider's web of diabetes"
Dr Greg Woods, PhD. Menzies Research Institute and Save the Tasmanian Devil Program

Social program:
As usual, morning tea, afternoon tea and lunch will be provided, as well as ample opportunity to interact with the various industry representatives who also sponsor the Symposium. Finally, at the end of the formal meeting time, a happy hour with drinks and fine food in the Garvan Institute Galleria.
We look forward to your attendance at this year's Symposium: it promises to be a great day of scientific discussion and debate.
