Biography

I am a visual science communicator and create 3D molecular animations and immersive visualisation experiences to engage broad audiences more deeply in the important research endeavours at Garvan.

I practiced as a veterinarian before coming to Garvan to pursue my interest in the origins of cancer. I completed my PhD in cancer biology, signal transduction 2009, but it was during my PhD that I realised my passion was for communicating science. I then worked as a science writer and illustrator with Prof Sue Clark and the Epigenetics Research Laboratory at Garvan and also at the National Breast Cancer Foundation. In 2012 I was awarded an Inspiring Australia grant to produce 3D animations on cancer and epigenetics.

I create animations using authentic scientific data, and blend storytelling with the tools of art and design. My current focus is on creating multi-media animations and immersive visualisation experiences for Garvan’s Cell Observatory, an immersive visualisation dome and virtual reality via head mounted displays.

My research interests include animation and visualisation in education, and I use practice-led and reflective practice approaches to explore research questions related to the field of scientific visualisation and biomedical animation. .

I am a Lab Research Fellow in the 3D visualisation and Aesthetics Laboratory at UNSW Art and Design and a Conjoint Senior Lecturer at UNSW Sydney.
