Ever thought of becoming a mentor to young women considering a career in STEM? Garvan PhD student Yu Shen (Shelley) Yin has been doing just that, by taking part in the 1000 Girls, 1000 Futures mentorship program through the New York Academy of Sciences. For Shelley, the mentoring experience has been an enriching and rewarding experience, and she encourages others to take on the mentoring challenge.

Castle Harlan Inc. is a US-based private equity firm that wishes to support the kind of medical research being undertaken at Garvan.

Garvan PhD student Emily Colvin has received the prestigious $10,000 Premier's Award for Outstanding Cancer Research Scholar from the Cancer Institute NSW for her research into pancreatic cancer. The news was announced at a gala ceremony late last week.

It was announced on Friday that Garvan endocrinologist and PhD student, Dr Sue Lynn Lau, had won the Graduate Student category of the AAAS Science “Dance your PhD” contest. Her winning entry is on YouTube and interprets her PhD, The role of vitamin D in beta-cell function.

At its annual conference in early December, the Australasian Society of Immunology awarded Garvan PhD student, Sandra Gardam, its prestigious New Investigator Award. Sandra's research looks at B cells, the cells that produce antibodies. She has been investigating the mechanisms that ensure we have the right number of B cells in our bodies.
