On Wednesday 11 February, Mr Geoff Dixon, Chairman of the Garvan Research Foundation, presented the inaugural Community Champion Awards 2015. The Community Champion Awards have been established to celebrate the achievements of members of the community and corporate supporters of Garvan who demonstrate exceptional commitment towards medical research and who support our researchers through tireless fundraising, volunteering, and helping to raise awareness of Garvan’s excellent research.
Recipients of the Community Champion Awards included:
- Ridley Corporation
- CBP Lawyers
- MLC Community Foundation
- King & Wood Mallesons
- Simon Oaten, Young Garvan Committee
- Love Your Sister
The inspirational Connie Johnson of the Love Your Sister Campaign (pictured below) received one of the Champion Awards on behalf of the Love Your Sister team, for their commitment to community fundraising for Garvan.
Connie and her brother Sam formed the Love Your Sister campaign two years ago after Connie was diagnosed with terminal breast cancer. She set her brother a challenge to set a new world record for the longest distance travelled on a unicycle, raise $1 million for breast cancer research and spread Connie’s message of breast cancer awareness.
Two years later – they have taken their campaign across Australia and raised over $2 million for Garvan’s cancer research.
Thrilled to receive the award Connie explained, “I am honoured to accept this award on behalf of the Love Your Sister team. We are incredibly proud of what we’ve achieved since Sam set out on his unicycle 2 years ago, and we are hugely grateful to the supporters who have helped us raise money for Garvan’s cancer research.”
Garvan congratulates all of the recipients and applauds these fine corporate and community fundraisers for their continued support.
