Research at the Clinical Insulin Resistance Group is focused on uncovering the molecular pathways involved in the transition from health to insulin resistance and metabolic disease related to overweight and obesity in humans. We perform cross-sectional, longitudinal and short-term nutritional interventions to uncover the factors that protect metabolically-healthy individuals with obesity from developing diabetes and cardiovascular disease. 

We have developed and established deep phenotyping tools to characterise glucose and energy homoeostasis and body fat distribution in humans. Aiming to improve health in individuals at risk of developing type 2 diabetes, we explore the molecular and metabolic factors that explain the diverse phenotypes of obesity and pre-diabetes. Findings may help explain why some people remain non-responsive to common current treatments and result in precision medicine and treatment success.
