Dr Kharen Doyle
I completed my PhD at the Queensland University of Technology where I studied the role of Insulin Like Growth Factor-1 following injury in the rat spinal cord. My first post doc position was at the Garvan Institute, where I continued to look at the role of growth factors following nervous system injury.
This project involved the study of olfactory stem cells when neurospheres were discovered to be growing in the neuronal cultures. To this day I continue to isolate and propagate olfactory (neural) stem cells from the olfactory neuroepithelium for use in neurogenic studies.
The olfactory neuroepithelium is used as a model of neurogenesis to allow a greater understanding of how neurons are born in other regions of the nervous system such as the brain. The olfactory neurons are capable of growing into different kinds of neurons including those that degenerate in diseases such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s Disease.
