Joe and Betty Banhidi thought they’d retire in 1992, but then Joe read an article about the new Australian Alpaca Centre, he fell in love with the animals and they occupied their lives for the next 25 years.
In 2013 Joe was diagnosed with aggressive mantle cell lymphoma. During his six months of chemo the couple’s eyes were opened to the impact of illness – and how medical research can help. This led them to the Garvan Institute and following a tour of our facilities, Joe and Betty made the selfless decision to leave a bequest in their Will.
Joe continues to convey a sense of gratitude to medical research for saving his life. “What I’ve got is incurable, but because of medical research it’s manageable”.
