George Quigg – The Gift of a Lifetime
George Quigg was part of the Garvan “family”. Having no immediate family of his own, George loved to attend the special gatherings at the Garvan, organised especially for our “Partners for the Future”. Always in his trademark Akubra hat, George would sometimes attend with a small group of his friends, and introduced them to the work of the Garvan.
When asked why he became a benefactor of the Garvan, his response was “I’d had friends who had problems with diabetes and epilepsy, plus Don Chisholm’s work with diabetes had impressed me so much I decided then and there to become a benefactor.”
During his lifetime, George gave modest amounts to support the Garvan’s work. Little did we know that George had a special interest in the stock market. When his estate was realised this year, the Garvan was the recipient of over $1 million. This substantial bequest will be directed to our endowment fund, and will provide income in perpetuity, enabling us to plan with security as well as fund new research projects with greater ease and speed.
Thank you George, your life’s work will continue to assist our life’s work.
