After graduating from the University of Lisbon (Portugal) with a MSc in Molecular biology and Genetics, I worked as a research assistant at the iMED institute in Lisbon where my work looked into establishing three-dimensional culture systems for mesenchymal stem cells and evaluating the potential for enhanced paracrine factor secretion, with applications in wound healing. Following that I moved to Sydney to begin my PhD at the Heart Research Institute where I joined the Applied Materials group under the supervision of Dr Steven Wise. My work looked into the potential of Bombyx mori (silkworm) silk as a biomaterial for artificial blood vessel engineering.
After completion of my PhD, I joined Dr Thomas Cox’s lab, where my research is now focused on understanding the interplay between the mechanical properties of tumours and their propensity to form metastasis.
